Uphole & Downhole Survey

At Retro Geoenergy, we provide specialized Uphole and Downhole Survey Services that are critical for accurate seismic data acquisition, velocity modeling, and near-surface characterization.

These surveys ensure precise depth control, optimum shot placement, and reliable velocity information for both exploration and engineering projects.

By combining field expertise with modern logging and velocity analysis techniques, our services help clients achieve high-quality seismic imaging and optimized survey designs.

Purpose:

Uphole surveys are conducted by drilling shallow boreholes (typically 20–150 m) and recording seismic waves generated at different depths to measure near-surface velocity variations.

Applications:

• Determination of weathered layer thickness and near-surface velocity models.
• Identification of low-velocity zones (LVZ) and subsurface lithological changes.
• Optimization of seismic shot depths for improved data quality.
• Support in static corrections during seismic data processing.

Deliverables:

• Layer velocity profiles (P-wave & S-wave).
• Weathering thickness maps.
• Depth-to-bedrock estimates.
• Detailed uphole interpretation reports.

Purpose:

Downhole surveys involve lowering seismic sensors (geophones or hydrophones) into a borehole while generating seismic signals at the surface. Travel times are measured to calculate vertical velocity profiles.

Applications:

• Accurate Vp and Vs velocity profiles with depth.
• Estimation of dynamic soil/rock properties (Poisson’s ratio, shear modulus, Young’s modulus).
• Foundation studies for dams, bridges, high-rise buildings, and infrastructure projects.
• Earthquake and seismic hazard assessment through site classification.
• Integration with MASW, SRT, and cross-hole methods for comprehensive subsurface characterization.

Deliverables:

• High-resolution vertical velocity logs.
• Elastic parameter calculations (Vp/Vs ratio, shear modulus, bulk modulus).
• Site classification based on international standards (NEHRP, Eurocode).
• Complete downhole interpretation and recommendations.
